In Finding You, I Find Myself by Zan

Ryo rubs at his arms and hugs himself, in a vain effort to keep warm. Little rivulets snake their way along the grouting on the floor tiles. At least here for the moment he is dry. He wonders when Tomoo will finish at court. He worries that whatever the outcome, Tomoo will still be angry, resentful and hurting. From Tomoo he gathers that the hearing is almost a year from the incident itself. First, the school authority is adamant that the school year completes before any proceedings can start to minimise disruption to the curriculum. The court then decides out of respect for the death of his mother to allow for the period of mourning to pass. It is now nearly a year since the stabbing of Tomoo’s brother, Hideo.

Ryo is only slightly jealous that Tomoo was so close with his brother because he is not as close with his sister as he ought to be. He loves that she teases him incessantly, that she is so sharp about the people around her, he will almost swear she is psychic sometimes and that she loves flowers. He loves watching her ‘see’ the flowers that he manages to bring to her. Mostly surreptitiously picked from houses on the way to seeing her. How she touches the leaves, stalks and stems – she traces the petals – outlines their fragility with her fingertips gently. This is how she sees the things around her and he really is proud of her but he does not know how to get this across to her and he wants them to be closer. Maybe he still has a chance to be. However, it is hard to be comfortable with Makiko in the hospital. He always feels clumsy there, with those silent walls and the sad glances they both receive when he visits – which is rarely.

“Hey,” a familiar voice startles him out of his reverie.
“Ah Tomoo,” Ryo decides then that maybe he will bring Tomoo to see Makiko. She will be happy to meet at least one of his friends. He notices that Tomoo is wet.
“I’m sorry Ryo,” Tomoo is apprehensive and apologetic. “I … I uh gave the umbrella away.” Tomoo continues in a rush, “She was going to get wet otherwise. She looked so lost and … and I had to do something and … and giving her shelter was the only thing I could give her after going through all that.” Tomoo is almost breathless, “I didn’t have anything else I could thank her with.”
“It’s ok,” Ryo smiles back shyly at his friend. Friend and companion thrust upon each other by circumstance. “You owe me and I have just the thing you can pay me back with.”

They first meet whilst waiting in line at a construction materials warehouse. It is easier to pay lads and men, cash-in-hand for work done on the day, as and when hands are in need. It is often that men leave empty-handed. It pays to be the early bird. Being young and desperate make them both early birds, albeit for different reasons. They are the same age and similar in look and build but very different in nature. Ryo is more forthcoming and friendly, Tomoo trusts rarely and opens up only a little to Ryo.

Tomoo does not let on even then, of the burning inside him. The one flame of revenge, that keeps him going. Tomoo’s life is not his anymore. In the way that life twists and turns, Tomoo once upon a time happy to want nothing more than to be able to put his brother through law school and be able look after his mother. Now, it is he himself who needs to study Law. Now he only can buy lilies that his mother will never be able to see or take in the scent of in the summer.

Ryo seems to live from day to day, enjoying the sunshine when he can. His visits to Makiko are few. His demeanor hides the fact that just maybe it is because he feels sorry for Makiko and he knows she does not want his pity. The discomfort distances them and theirs is a silence neither knows how to bridge. Thus, Ryo spends his days smiling and laughing.

For the moment, these boys have each other. They sleep under the stars when it is fine and dry, and seek shelter where they can when the weather is not so kind. Tonight Ryo will tell Tomoo a little more about Makiko and will make him spruce himself up a little to go to the hospital together one day. For the moment, they are all they have in this world. For the moment, they are all they need.

“It looks like the rain might get worse.” Ryo says looking up at the forbidding sky. The humidity and wind is building up and the electrostatic show above indicates that maybe a typhoon is brewing.
“Yes looks like we’re sleeping at the warehouse again,” Tomoo nods in agreement.
“It’s fine. We’ll be fine.” Ryo wipes the wet off Tomoo’s face, with a little hand towel.

That night they barely manage to find shelter from the storm. Just to the side of a warehouse shed, by some steel pilings and girders. It is none to safe, but they reckon they can wait it out. Monsoon rains like this pour torrents down and then when it is over the sun is as hot again as if the rain never was.

That night, they huddle together, for warmth – their arms linking, their backpacks offer makeshift protection, and just each other’s shoulders for pillows. It is as close again as they will ever get to another. Ryo speaks of his wishes for himself and his sister and Tomoo whispers of Law school to honour his brother. They vow, in the thunder, lightning and rain, to help one another fulfill each other’s task. They laugh, a little giddy from the lightness of telling each other and maybe from the feeling that maybe at last they each have found someone they can trust and depend on. They make a decision to go and see Ryo’s sister together to cheer her up some. Tomoo decides, perhaps it *it* is time – after all – to let other people into his life.

There is a sudden tearing sound, and the light that fills the sky blinds them momentarily. Instinctively Ryo pushes Tomoo and his backpack away from the building. Tomoo tries to grab Ryo along but in the wet, he falls, his slippers tripping him up. The crash of metal pillars is loud in Tomoo’s ears, which make a strange background to Ryo’s muffled single scream.
It is some weeks before Tomoo gets up the courage to go to the hospital. He manages to scrape together enough to buy some flowers.

“Ryo, is that you?” She is slightly melancholic, but happy enough to receive him. “I’m surprised you’re here so soon again.”
“Uh … I uhmm,” he is hesitant.
“It’s alright. I’m so glad you came.” She waves at him and stops to sniff the air and smiles, “and you brought flowers too. This *is* a lovely surprise.”
He finds he cannot speak. He wants to say something, at least along the lines of some sort of truth, but he cannot bring himself to.
“Ryo are you fine?”
He realises she is talking to him. “I’m fine thank you for asking,” he says softly.
“So formal,” she laughs lightly at him and in a conspiratorial whisper she asks, “Why are you whispering?”
“Did a cat get your tongue?” She regards him like an errant child.
“Uhm … here,” he awkwardly puts the little posy in her hands and then cups her hands round paper and the ribbons. Her fingers gently brush his and he hopes that she cannot sense the slight tremor that will give away his lie. He hopes she does not see through his charade at all.
“I will come more often now, I promise.” He is still whispering, still afraid.
Makiko does not say anything but just smiles benignly and happily in his direction.
“I … I will take my leave now. Please take care of yourself.” He bows slightly. He feels she can sense it even if she cannot see.
Tomoo’s life is not his anymore. In the way that life twists and turns, there are many more vows he needs to keep. Tomoo is no more, as he fulfils his brother’s hopes and dreams with the mantle of Naruse Ryo.

Completely speechless.

I'm glad you think so. It was very hard to write a character who is essentially the whole series but only truly appears for mere minutes in a single episode.

You honour me much. Thank you.

I really like this. It fills in the gaps of the plot, and I really like your take on Ryo. The writing is really pretty and delicate, too.

*blushes* - thank you. Those really are lovely compliments.

Thank you for reading.

Oh Zan, you wrote Maou fic!

So soft and sad and rain-soaked, I really got caught up in this. It's been a while sicne I watched the series, but I love, love the way you've captured Makiko's character.

It is as close again as they will ever get to another.

Such a beautifully tragic line. The moment when they make their pact in the rain is wonderful. I think you've done a lovely job of contructing these scenes, and they could fit right into the series. ♥

*blushes* - *big grins too* ...Owww my cheeks hurt now. ^_~

But I'm good. How can I not be? Thank you. I'm glad you think so. Like I said to rikke, it was hard to write scenes that were only hinted at, and more on a character that only appears mere minutes in only one episode.

I may use this as a jump off point to write more Makiko fic, because I've always wanted to. So I'm glad you think how I've drawn her out.

Tragedy and rain, seems like a running theme through my many fandoms, but it suits me, as I am a rain person I think. Excepting Ohno/Rain/Sea of course ... ^__^

Once again thank you my dear. ILY! *hugs*

Oh, you should write more Makiko fic. I enjoyed her character a lot, and her story is quite sad, too.

Oh yes, rain is a wonderful mood setter. We can be rain people together.

*gives you soothing throat drop*

Ohh your icon is so much love! And you're short a green cup for aiba! ^__^ unless of course he's the saucer, holding everyone up! ^_~

*takes* - thanks dear I need it!

Hee, I found that icon the other day and I just had to grab it. Tea and rain! I didn't realize the cup colours were almost significant for something. ;)

I do feel bad about you being ill, dear. *snuggles*

go to sleep my dear! *snuggles 'Chu!'*

I really love this! I just found it while finally catching up form all my gallivanting about ^^"

But really, I love how you give this relationship depth . . . actually both of them, the Ryo/Tomoo and the NAruse/Tomoo / Makiko --that's very difficult to unconfusingly identify, you know, with all the name-swtiching and all.

Makiko seemed such a a strong but sad character. She just gets completely screwed over in so many ways, and to me felt like a stronger reason for Naruse to change some of his plans than Shiori, much as I actually liked Naruse/Shiori.

But when Makiko essentially cut the tie, lovingly, but firmly . . . I think my heart broke more for that than almost anything else.

This brought all of that back&hearts

The other part I just loved about this is how you show both the weight and the gaps in Tomoo's relationship with Ryo&hearts IT really is quite perfect, you know.

I am so glad you wrote this!

ahhh thank you love! I'm so glad you came by to read! I will be more appropriately appreciative when I am more alive than I am now.

*hugs* I have missed you.

;_; make me tear up at the end.
Because really, Tomoo's life wasn't his since the moment his brother was killed, from that point, he lost who he was little by little, until he was a complete stranger even to himself.

Lovely, lovely writting. Almost make me wish that it's rain here.

*hugs you hard* - You are too sweet my dear.

he lost who he was little by little, until he was a complete stranger even to himself. - You are exactly right there.

*hugs you some more* - Love you lots!
